Avoid These 3 Common Chipping Mistakes

Published: August 26, 2023

Mistake #1: Hitting Down on the Back of the Ball

Avoid positioning the ball at the back of your stance and leaning the club shaft towards the target.

Instead, focus on utilizing the bounce of the club.

Place the ball in the middle of your stance, maintain a neutral shaft angle, and distribute your weight 70/30, favoring the lead foot.

This setup allows for a smoother glide across the turf and improves consistency.

Mistake #2: Swinging Straight Down the Target Line

Contrary to popular belief, swinging straight at the target isn't the best approach for chipping.

Instead, follow an arc with your club.

After contact, finish up and left of the target, with your chest facing the target.

Keep your arms connected to your body for stability and a more consistent motion.

Mistake #3: Over-Accelerating Through the Shot

Avoid the temptation to over-accelerate during your chip shots.

Focus on a controlled deceleration at impact.

Think of having "soft hands" rather than "fast hands."

Adjust the shot distance by varying the length of your backswing and maintaining a smooth follow-through.

By avoiding these three chipping mistakes—hitting down on the back of the ball, swinging straight down the target line, and over-accelerating—you'll experience better results in your short game.
